Snorkeling offers an exciting introduction to Tenerife’s ocean world for those who would like to look beneath the surface without scuba diving. Wearing a mask, snorkel and fins, you can swim along the surface while fish, volcanic rocks and various ocean creatures may come into view below you.
You can choose between two different versions of the activity. Shore snorkeling takes place in Los Cristianos, in the area of Bahía de las Rayas, also known as Rays Bay. The dive center is located directly beside the coast, so the water is only a short walk away after preparing your equipment. The layers, small cavities and varied surfaces of the lava rock provide a natural habitat for numerous fish species and other creatures.
If you would also enjoy a short boat trip, the boat option departs from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje. The approximately 20-minute journey takes you to the La Caleta area, where you can explore the ocean farther from the shore. Volcanic formations, schools of fish and various ocean creatures may also appear beneath the surface here.
For both options, an instructor helps you prepare, explains how to use the equipment and remains with the group throughout the time in the ocean. The provider supplies the wetsuit, mask, snorkel and fins. A floating board is also available during the shore activity, allowing you to take a short rest if needed.
The approximately 50 minutes spent in the water give you enough time to do more than take a quick look beneath the surface. You can become comfortable looking through the mask, find a relaxed rhythm with the fins and watch the underwater landscape change below you. Previous snorkeling experience is not required, but confident swimming ability is essential.
The activity can be a particularly good choice for couples, friends and families with children aged 6 or older who can swim. If one member of your group would like to snorkel while another chooses a beginner scuba dive, let us know and we will try to arrange the two activities at the same place and time.
The natural ocean world presents something different on every occasion. Rays, turtles and other animals may be present at the activity locations, but their appearance cannot be guaranteed. The true value of the experience lies in observing, in a natural environment, whatever the ocean reveals that day.

• ocean life is natural and constantly changing; sightings of turtles, rays, dolphins or other larger animals cannot be guaranteed
