The Reserva Ambiental is a good choice for those who want to discover the real history of the island beyond Tenerife's beaches and well-known attractions. In the reserve located in the San Blas area, the volcanic landscape, ancient Canarian culture and nature are closely connected, so during the walk you can also understand how Tenerife was formed and how people lived here centuries ago.
The experience begins at the visitor centre located inside the Barceló Tenerife***** hotel. Interactive exhibitions and impressive audiovisual elements explain the formation, history and wildlife of the area in an accessible way. This introduction helps ensure that during the outdoor walk you do not simply see interesting formations and ruins, but also understand their significance.
The guided route then continues through a protected landscape of volcanic origin. Lava flows millions of years old have been further shaped by wind and water, creating unusual rock formations, small ravines and raw, almost untouched-looking sections of landscape along the way. The surroundings reveal a completely different side of southern Tenerife from what you can see in the nearby resort areas.
The walk is also special from a cultural perspective. Ancient caves, archaeological remains, historical traces and one of the sacrificial sites of the indigenous Guanche people tell the story of how the island's first inhabitants adapted to this volcanic environment. The explanations connected to these locations bring Guanche culture closer, whose traces can be found in many parts of Tenerife but are rarely presented in such a coherent way.
One of the greatest values of the experience is that it does not simply show you the landscape, but also helps you understand it. During the guided walk, the natural formations, wildlife and human history come together as a single story. This makes the Reserva Ambiental a nature walk, a cultural discovery and an easy-to-follow educational experience all at once.
It is a particularly good choice if you are looking for a calm, meaningful experience, enjoy unusual landscapes and would like to discover a less visible side of Tenerife. The approximately two-hour visit can easily be included in your day as a family, couple or group of friends, while offering much more than a simple walk or museum visit.
