Parasailing (also known as parascending) is a parachute-based water activity in which participants are towed by a motorboat. The speed of the boat and the lift generated by the large canopy gradually raise participants to a height of up to 50 metres (164 feet) above the ocean.
The programme departs from Puerto Colón harbour. Check-in is followed by a short safety briefing, after which every participant receives the mandatory life jacket and the harness required for the flight. This is followed by a short motorboat ride to a suitable take-off area at sea.
Take-off takes place directly from the motorboat's specially designed rear platform. The participant is connected to the canopy in a seated position using a safety harness, after which the operating crew gradually releases the tow rope. There is no freefall or jump into the water: the ascent and descent are controlled from the boat.
The complete programme takes around 45 minutes, including the safety preparations, the short boat ride and the flight. The actual time spent in the air is around 10 minutes, so this is not a long boat excursion but a short programme centred on a single defining experience.
Depending on the weather, participants' weight and ocean conditions, one, two or even three people may fly under the same canopy. Flying together cannot be guaranteed: for safety reasons, the final grouping is decided by the crew on site.
The programme does not require previous parasailing experience or significant physical fitness, but it is not accessible due to the need to board the motorboat, the movement at sea and the use of a safety harness. It is not a suitable choice during pregnancy or in the case of serious back problems, cardiovascular disease or another serious medical condition.
Parasailing is for those who want to see the coastline from above but are not looking for a long or particularly physically demanding water activity. This experience provides a unique perspective and a genuine flying experience in a short time, while the flight altitude, the number of people flying together and departure are always determined by the current ocean and weather conditions.
