If you have long been drawn to the feeling of gliding across the surface of the ocean using the power of the wind, the Kitesurf programme is a good opportunity to take your first steps in a safe environment - or take your existing skills to the next level. Lessons are available for complete beginners, intermediate riders and more experienced kitesurfers alike, so you do not have to follow a predetermined template: the lesson is adapted to your current level and goals.
The location is El Médano, one of Tenerife's best-known stretches of coastline for wind sports. The surf centre is located directly on the oceanfront, less than 50 m (164 ft) from the entrance to the kitesurfing zone, so you do not need to walk far with the equipment: the lesson can start almost directly next to the centre.
If you are trying the sport for the first time, the lesson is built up gradually. You learn the most important basics of how the wind works and how to control the kite, learn safe launching and landing, and then first begin to feel on shore how the kite responds to your movements. Once you can do this with sufficient confidence, practice can continue in the ocean, where the initial focus is on controlling the pulling force of the kite, followed later by your first starts on the board.
If you already kitesurf, you do not need to start again from the basics. The instructor can adapt the lesson to your own goals, whether you want to improve riding upwind, turns, board control or move more confidently in stronger wind. This means the lesson can also be valuable if you already arrive with independent experience.
A particularly useful part of the lesson is the BBtalkin radio system, which allows the instructor to stay in contact with you while you are moving. You do not need to return to shore for every correction: you can receive instructions and feedback directly while practising, which can make the learning process smoother.
The centre provides the necessary equipment. Kitesurfing equipment, a wetsuit and a harness are provided for the lesson, and equipment insurance is included in the price of the lesson. Storage facilities for valuables, toilets and an outdoor freshwater shower are also available at the centre, allowing you to change and freshen up more comfortably after the ocean session.
With a 1.5-hour session, you can try what the world of kitesurfing feels like, while the 3-, 6- or 9-hour packages give you more time for the skills you learn to build on each other. Everyone progresses at a different pace, and wind conditions also affect how far you can get during each session - this is why the focus here is not on a pre-promised result, but on gradual progress adapted to your own level.
